2020 Impact Report

A Word From Our Founder & CEO

They say hindsight is 20/20 and looking back on the year 2020, I see clearly how that phrase applies to my view of our Murphy's Naturals team.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit last Spring, our team didn't take shelter, but instead, we came together in a magnificent way. There was plenty of reason for concern and hesitation with uncertainty seeded throughout our news and social media platforms. With caution, but without hesitation, our company came together, unified, to rally and support our community and build our company through a historic year.

Looking back at 2020 and our team, I see with perfect-vision the individuals that make up our team. They are courageous, kind, and selfless. They came to our facility as essential workers every day. They looked after one another by taking precautions seriously. They adapted to the needs of our business, our customers, and our community.

Demand for Murphy's Naturals products reached an all-time high in 2020. With brand awareness on the rise and Americans exploring the great outdoors in record numbers, we saw revenues more than double. Our Murphy's Team tripled in size. Thankfully we brought on more high-quality team members, some of whom were without jobs due to the pandemic. It is hard to believe such a successful year began with so much uncertainty. In the early days of spring, many retailers were closed across the country, so we began the year significantly off target. Q1 sales significantly trailed expectations. As the season progressed, uncertainty transformed into optimism and determination.

In 2020 we experienced remarkable growth as a company; for that, I am proud. We continued to innovate and produce quality natural products for outdoor living; for that, I am proud. As a team, we continue to live the values of a Certified B Corporation; for that, I am proud. As a brand, we fulfilled our commitments for volunteerism, to 1% For The Planet, and our commitment to contribute 2% of our revenues to Doing Others Good; for that, I am proud. We innovated and pivoted to manufacture hand sanitizer for our community when its availability was nearly zero; for that I am proud.

But, what am I most proud of in 2020 as Founder of Murphy's Naturals?

It is unquestionably OUR TEAM . We cared for one another, and we watched out for one another, and we were committed to one another. Our achievements as a company took dedication, sacrifice, and commitment from us all. I couldn't be more proud or grateful than I am of our Team.

We certainly hope that the need for the pandemic precautions of 2020 will wane this year. But if they do not, we are prepared as a team to persevere. It is with great optimism and confidence that we enter 2021, and together as a team, we will thrive.

- PG Freeman

Philip is a U.S. Navy veteran and has over twenty years of experience in the retail and industrial packaging world. Summer in the south is no joke when it comes to mosquitoes. While he and his wife, Pam Freeman, would sit out on their deck on summer evenings, Pam would get ten mosquito bites to Philip’s one. Philip looked for a natural alternative to DEET and couldn’t find one that was natural, smelled nice, and worked well. After researching essential oils in his spare time, he found the key to a natural repellent was a high concentration of a combination of essential oils. Philip began working on formulations in his home garage, which ultimately evolved into the brand Murphy’s Naturals, the one we all know and love today.

QUARTERLY VOLUNTEERISM

We believe we are better together and when we work as a team, the reach of our impact is greater. Each team member is required to complete quarterly company led volunteer days. For us, this means anything from pulling weeds at an urban farm to picking up trash off of a trail or river and always sharing a meal together afterward.

Over the last seven years, we’ve partnered with local and global environmentally minded nonprofits in both giving and volunteerism.

Here’s a look at our longest standing partnerships:

TRIANGLE LAND CONSERVANCY

TLC is a nonprofit located in Durham, NC dedicated to safeguarding clean water, protecting natural habitats and supporting local farms and food. This year, Murphy’s Naturals partnered with TLC to help fund the Williamson Preserve located in Raleigh, NC. The preserve is aimed at strengthening local food and farm production as well as strengthening the natural ecological functions of the land.

RALEIGH CITY FARM

RCF is an urban farm located less than two miles from Murphy’s headquarters in downtown Raleigh. They have turned a vacant piece of land into working farmland, sustainably connecting the community to agriculture. This fall we volunteered on the farm to prepare the garden beds for the winter and helped cut back the pollinator garden.

EARTHSHARE NC

EarthShare NC is a network of local and national nonprofits committed to preserving and enhancing the natural environment. The past few years, we have partnered with EarthShare NC and participated in their big annual event, Earth Day Challenge where we are matched with a nonprofit and do volunteer work for them.

Bee Downtown Partnership

Did you know that we have five beehives on our rooftop? It wouldn’t be possible without our beloved partners, Bee Downtown! Bee Downtown is focused on helping rebuild sustainable honeybee populations in urban areas by installing and maintaining beehives for companies as a sustainable initiative, as well as an employee engagement and leadership development program.

Bee Downtown maintains our rooftop hives and harvests the honey for us. This fall our team suited up and visited the hives to learn how important they are to the environment and our well being. Afterward, we had a teamwide bottling event where we bottled all 150lbs of honey that the Murphy’s hives produced during the year. We then sold this honey and donated all the proceeds to a local nonprofit organization.

INGREDIENT HIGHLIGHT

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

Lemon eucalyptus oil comes from the Eucalyptus citriodora tree and is the only plant based ingredient recognized by the CDC that’s as effective as DEET at repelling mosquitoes! Our suppliers, Citrifine®, only include the original essential oil components found in the eucalyptus citriodora oil and nothing more.

Citrifine’s process for harvesting and extracting the oil is an entirely renewable, sustainable, and ethical process. The leaves are harvested by farmers in different areas of the world, providing stable jobs and supporting local economies. The steam used to distill the oil from the leaves uses a closed water system. Waste leaves are the only fuel used to generate the distillation boiler and excess leaves are used as fertilizer to maintain soil health for future trees. We’re proud to support Citrifine’s efforts to ensure farmers’ livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

SUSTAINABILITY IS ALWAYS A WORK IN PROGRESS

A Look at 2020 Sustainability and Environmental Performance

SWITCH TO RECYCLED CONTENT

We transitioned from virgin plastic bottles to one that contains 25% post consumer recycled (PCR) material for our Lemon Eucalyptus Oil Insect Repellent Spray. By using PCR content, we are reducing the amount of new raw materials extracted, and effectively reusing recycled material.

PACKAGING EVALUATION

We evaluated all packaging materials and set short term and long term goals for each product. We will begin to use more sustainable materials by reducing plastic, using non-virgin paper, and upping our post consumer recycled content in our plastic packaging and across our entire organization.

CARBON OFFSETTING

We celebrated five years of partnering with Carbon Fund to offset our carbon emissions! In honor of the partnership, Carbon Fund planted 50 trees on behalf of Murphy’s Naturals!

CARDBOARD BALER

Obtaining a cardboard baler has helped us compact our recyclable cardboard so there are fewer truck pickups - helping to reduce our overall carbon footprint.

We offset 72 metric tons of our 2019 carbon carbon emissions. That’s the equivalent of 655,087 miles driven by an average car!

Our People

As a B Corporation, we have a triple bottom line of People, Planet, and Profit – not just profit.

When it comes to people, we had some exciting updates in 2020 and implemented the following:

A formal inclusive parental leave policy for both new mothers and fathers

A formal policy for breastfeeding mothers to support the critical needs of both baby and mom

Annual Incentive Program in which all full-time employees earned stock options in the company and a bonus based off of company wide goals

The Road Ahead

We approach 2021 as a year full of opportunity and hope. Our goals for 2021 are focused on strengthening our sustainability efforts and partnering with like-minded companies to spur industry change and widen our collective impact.

GROVE COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP ON PLASTIC FREE

In partnership with Grove and numerous other mission driven brands, we are taking the first steps to becoming Plastic Free.

Step 1: Assess our current packaging and identify areas of waste and resource inefficiency

Step 2: Research non-plastic and bio-plastic alternatives available in the market

Step 3: Optimize packaging for resource efficiency with available plastic alternatives and assess suitability with operations

Step 4: Transition to higher post-consumer recycled content and utilize biodegradable and compostable packaging

PLASTIC OFFSETTING

While we are not yet plastic free, we want to better track, manage, and measure our plastic output so that it can be offset with rePurpose Global - an innovative plastic offset company who is partnering with waste collectors in countries like India to support their waste management systems.

CRUELTY FREE CERTIFICATION

We are in the process of becoming Cruelty Free Certified. This will assess our ingredients suppliers and ensure no animal testing is conducted throughout our supply chain. A Cruelty Free Certification will reflect our values and guarantee our ingredients are sourced ethically.

BETTER TRACKING AND MONITORING OF GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

Step 1: Gathering and compiling shipment data from vendors to better understand our average shipment mileage, weight, and total shipments delivered

Step 2: Establishing a baseline for our energy usage from office and warehouse facilities

Step 3: Establishing a waste management system to measure scrap and reduce the amount of waste to landfill

Through better tracking and monitoring, we will be able to identify areas for improvement in daily operations and begin detailing our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
